Toni Kroos has been named Germany’s Footballer of the Year for 2024. The 34-year-old midfielder, who recently announced his retirement from professional football, received the accolade after a season that saw him win the Champions League with Real Madrid and reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with Germany.
Kroos received 285 votes in the Kicker poll, ahead of Germany teammate Florian Wirtz of Leverkusen, who received 246 votes, and Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, also of Leverkusen, who received 66 votes.
The award, organized by German sports magazine Kicker, recognizes the outstanding performance of German players and players active in Germany.
The accolade comes as a recognition of Kroos’ remarkable contributions to the sport. In his final season, he showcased his exceptional passing accuracy, which stood at 94.8% in the big-five European leagues, the highest in the continent.
His high level of play was instrumental in Real Madrid’s success in the Champions League and his influence on the German national team’s performance in Euro 2024.
