On 21st July, 2023, the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya hosted the highly anticipated 7th edition of the Women in the Classroom Conference, organized by Youngsters and Teachers Hub in collaboration with GNAT Yilo Krobo Municipality and 1 Million Teachers. The event aimed to empower and uplift female teachers in the region. Under the theme “BECOMING,” the conference featured esteemed speakers and dignitaries who inspired, educated, and motivated the participants.
Distinguished speakers graced the event, sharing their wisdom and expertise with the eager audience. Miss Emmaline Datey, CEO of ICS Africa Limited, Mrs. Mavis A. Leonards, Executive Director of ‘A Jewel In The Street Foundation’, and Mrs. Barbara Dede Sedode, Commercial Director of Angel Broadcasting Network delivered insightful talks, encouraging participants to embrace their potential fearlessly.
Mad. Lucy Amanda Asamoah, the National Vice President of GNAT, shared her perspective during the panel discussion, reiterated the organization’s commitment to positively impact women, acknowledging the crucial role they play in shaping the future of education and society.
Fourth time Keynote Speaker, Former advisor to the CEO of the Volta River Authority, Dr. (Mrs.) I. Stella Agyenim-Boateng, emphasized the importance of discipline and optimism for a brighter future, motivating participants to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations.
Guest Speaker, Dr. Cecilia Tutu-Danquah, highlighted the crucial role of mental health in the learning process, emphasizing the need for a supportive environment for learners.
The conference was ably chaired by Research Fellow at the Legon Centre of International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), University of Ghana, Legon, Dr. Afua Boatemaa Yakohene, whose leadership ensured the smooth flow of the event and added a sense of gravitas to the occasion.
One of the highlights of the conference was the recognition of 60 exceptional female teachers who were awarded honorary citations for their dedication and hard work in shaping the minds of the younger generation.
The Conference drew the presence of esteemed officials, including Madam Lily Otoo, the National Gender Coordinator for GNAT, Mrs. Lydia Ama Hayford, the Municipal Secretary for Yilo Krobo and the Senior Assistant Registrar of UESD. Additionally, some National, Regional, and District Executives lent their support to the conference, underscoring the significance of the event in empowering women in the education sector.
Each participating teacher was offered enrollment in a development program with 1 Million Teachers, providing them with additional resources and skills to enhance their teaching abilities.
The Women in the Classroom Conference, with a rich history spanning four years, continues to empower female educators to become catalysts for positive change in their classrooms and communities.
