Daboase, Western Region – In a heartbreaking incident, two students from Daboase Senior High Technical School lost their lives after drowning in the Subri River. The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, June 23, 2023, when the victims, all first-year students, ventured out of the dormitory to swim in the river, which had swollen due to incessant rainfall. As of now, one student’s body remains unaccounted for.

Emmanuel Boakye, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Wassa East, confirmed the tragic news to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show. According to Boakye, the three students were accompanied by four others who also went to swim in the Subri River.

A combined team of police and fire personnel from the district worked diligently to recover the bodies of the two deceased students. The retrieved bodies have been transported to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital Morgue for further examination and identification. Meanwhile, an ongoing search operation is underway to locate the missing student, whether alive or deceased.

Speaking about the incident, DCE Emmanuel Boakye stated, “Seven students sneaked to swim in the river. Three of them drowned, and two have been retrieved, remaining one. We have since deposited the two bodies at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital whilst the search is still on to retrieve the other one dead or alive. We have since informed their parents.”

The entire school community is now grappling with shock and grief following the loss of these young lives. The school administration, teachers, and students are providing support to the families of the victims during this difficult time.

It is crucial to raise awareness about the dangers of swimming in flooded rivers or any other unsafe water bodies, especially during heavy rainfall when water levels can rise rapidly.
